Inclusive Pedestrian Signals — Making Putrajaya Accessible to All

Since 2025, Perbadanan Putrajaya has systematically upgraded its pedestrian signal infrastructure to serve all residents, including Orang Kurang Upaya (OKU) and the visually impaired. The initiative introduces two complementary technologies across Putrajaya’s 141 signalised pedestrian crossings.

Accessible Pedestrian Crossing Map

Technology 1: Animatic Pedestrian Signal with Audible Countdown

Beginning 2025, Perbadanan Putrajaya replaced conventional pedestrian signals at 29 crossings with animatic pedestrian signals, featuring:

  • Visual countdown timer: A numeric countdown display on the pedestrian signal head, showing the remaining time to cross.
  • Audible alert: An integrated buzzer/speaker that sounds as the green man phase begins, enabling visually impaired pedestrians to cross safely without relying on sight.
  • School & community priority: Animatic signals are prioritised at crossings near schools and high-footfall community areas to enhance child and pedestrian safety.
Signal Type Count
Animatic (countdown + audible) 29 crossings
Redman / Green Man (standard accessible) 15 crossings
Total Accessible 44 crossings

Technology 2: Smart Pedestrian Crossing — WPD System

The Wireless Push Button Detector (WPD) system, deployed at Surau Al-Manar, Presint 14, represents Putrajaya’s first fully smart pedestrian crossing:

  • Wireless demand detection: A pedestrian entering the designated waiting zone triggers an automatic crossing request via wireless sensors/cameras — no physical button press required.
  • Signal coordination: The crossing demand is transmitted to the traffic signal controller (ATMS/SCATS), which adjusts the phase to give way to pedestrians.
  • Saber Light: An overhead “saber light” strip installed above the crossing changes colour in sync with the traffic signal, providing an additional visual cue to drivers and pedestrians.
  • IoT integration: All sensor data feeds into the Integrated Operations Centre (IOC) for monitoring and incident response.

Data processed in accordance with the Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA). No biometric data is stored; sensor detection is anonymous and event-based only.
