Putrajaya's structured food waste collection from households and commercial premises — 25.74 tonnes recovered in 2025 across residential and supermarket streams
Overview
The Municipal Food Waste Collection Programme is Putrajaya’s operational food waste diversion scheme, targeting organic waste generated by both households and commercial premises across the city. Coordinated by Alam Flora Environmental Solutions (AFES) with oversight from Perbadanan Putrajaya (PPJ) and SWCorp, the programme directly measures and satisfies K4 (Indicator 51) of MS ISO 37122:2019.
The programme operates in two complementary streams: a community-based residential collection and a dedicated commercial collection from supermarket partners. Collected food waste is earmarked for biogas treatment at the Anaerobic Digester (AD) facility at FIKS Presint 15, which is capable of converting organic waste into biogas for on-site energy applications.

Note: The programme commenced active collection from Mac 2025. January and February recorded zero collection, reflecting the programme ramp-up phase. Consistent monthly collections of 2.45–3.66 tan were achieved from April onwards.

The commercial collection sub-programme targets food waste from supermarkets and wet market retailers operating within Putrajaya. Data is tracked against the Biogas Anaerobic Digester (AD) treatment plant at FIKS Presint 15.

Pasaraya Mydin is the dominant contributor at 48%, followed by Ayam Segar at 40%, reflecting the volume of perishable food waste generated by major supermarkets and wet market operators in Putrajaya.
Biogas Treatment Pipeline: 0 KG Sisa Makanan = 0 m³ Biogas = 0 KW. While the Anaerobic Digester infrastructure at FIKS is operational, the food waste treatment phase is scheduled for activation in the programme’s next phase. When at capacity, the AD can convert organic waste into biogas for on-site electricity generation.
Collection Infrastructure
The food waste programme draws on AFES’s established waste collection network across Putrajaya, supplemented by direct route-to-source collection from commercial premises:
- Residential Stream: Community-level food waste collection from households, coordinated through AFES’s scheduled collection routes across Putrajaya presincts.
- Commercial Stream: Dedicated scheduled pick-ups from supermarket back-of-house food waste points — Pasaraya Mydin, Ayam Segar, Pasaraya Segi Fresh, Pasaraya Hero, and Pasaraya Redtick.
- Biogas Treatment Destination: FIKS Presint 15 — Fasiliti Inovasi Kitar Semula, housing the Anaerobic Digester (AD) unit for organic waste-to-energy processing.
