Smart Street Light System
IoT-Controlled Energy-Efficient Street Lighting Across Putrajaya
Overview
Putrajaya’s Smart Street Light System represents a transformative step in municipal energy management — marrying IoT intelligence with sustainable urban infrastructure. Operated by Perbadanan Putrajaya in collaboration with Vectolabs Technologies, the system deploys Smart Lighting Controllers (SLC) across the city’s 28,425-lamp network, enabling remote monitoring, automated fault detection, and granular energy analytics from a centralised command interface.
The initiative began as a landmark pilot in 2021 at the Diplomatic Enclave, Presint 15, where 120 smart lanterns were installed — Malaysia’s first municipally-operated smart street lighting deployment. Built on LoRaWAN (Long Range Wide Area Network) technology and funded under the National Technology and Innovation Sandbox (NTIS), the pilot demonstrated that a single municipal-owned IoT gateway could reliably cover a 2–5 km urban radius, eliminating the need for siloed, proprietary networks in future deployments.
Following the success of the pilot, Perbadanan Putrajaya secured the Low Carbon Cities Catalyst Grant (GeRAK), channelled through the Strategic Programme to Empower the People and the Economy (PERKASA) by the Malaysian Green Technology and Climate Change Corporation (MGTC). This grant funded the expansion of smart lighting along Persiaran Perdana — Putrajaya’s iconic central boulevard traversing Presint 2, 3, and 4 — bringing connected energy management to the city’s highest-profile public corridor.
PSCB Blueprint Alignment
This initiative is classified under Smart Application 1.5: Smart Bus Stops in the Putrajaya Smart City Blueprint (PSCB).
Objective: Reduce carbon emissions and air pollution through the use of efficient modes of public transportation.
Desire Outcome:
- Energy saving and reduction of carbon emissions.
Implementation Approach:
- Sensor component need to be installed for motion sensors (night time) for energy saving.
