The Smart Bin Putrajaya initiative represents Perbadanan Putrajaya’s first deployment of an Internet of Things (IoT)-enabled public waste bin — a sensor-equipped, solar-powered, and GPS-tracked unit capable of holding up to five times more waste than a conventional bin. Launched as a Proof of Concept (POC) on 4 September 2025 at Dataran Putra, Presint 1, the Smart Bin marks Putrajaya’s entry into sensor-enabled public bin infrastructure and directly addresses MS ISO 37122:2019 Indicator 58 (Sensor-Enabled Public Bins).

The POC deployment at Dataran Putra — Putrajaya’s primary civic square and one of the city’s highest footfall public spaces — provides real-world operational data to validate the technology before a phased city-wide rollout across Putrajaya’s 10,273 public bins.


Smart Bin Technology Features

The Smart Bin unit deployed at Dataran Putra is equipped with six core technology modules:

POC Deployment: Dataran Putra, Presint 1

Why Dataran Putra?

Dataran Putra, the main civic square adjacent to the Prime Minister’s Office in Presint 1, was selected as the POC location for several strategic reasons:

  • Maximum visibility — as Putrajaya’s primary ceremonial and public gathering space, the bin is exposed to both residents and visitors
  • High footfall — consistent daily usage provides reliable data across varying waste volumes and environmental conditions
  • Monitored environment — existing CCTV coverage and security presence around Dataran Putra supports operational monitoring of the POC unit
  • Symbolic significance — deploying at Putrajaya’s civic centrepiece signals institutional commitment to smart waste innovation

The unit has been operational since 4 September 2025 and is transmitting live data to AFES and PPj monitoring systems.


How the Smart Bin System Works

This closed-loop system eliminates reactive bin collection — where crews check every bin regardless of fill level — replacing it with demand-driven collection, where AFES vehicles are dispatched only to bins that actually need emptying. At scale, this reduces collection vehicle kilometres, cuts fuel consumption, and improves service levels at high-traffic public spaces.


Rollout Roadmap

The POC at Dataran Putra is Phase 1 of a proposed multi-phase expansion:
